In February 2021, the uniquely self-crafted instrumentation and DIY spirit of Congolese electronic collective KOKOKO! is coming to a record store near you. Handmade in Kinshasa, DRC ahead of their 2019 world tour, KOKOKO! built 8 bespoke 12" "playable sleeves" to house an upcoming Fongola Instrumentals white label release.
Built by the band in their workshop, there are only 8 editions worldwide of the stringed metal contraptions, with just 7 made available in key worldwide independent stores (including Rough Trade in the UK) on 5th February, alongside a strictly limited run of white-label vinyl (300-only). They will be given away randomly to purchasers of the white label during the week of release in selected independent stores globally.
For those that don't get so lucky upon release day, the Fongola Instrumentals album will be available to enjoy from all streaming services on the same day (Fri 5th Feb).
***Due to Covid-19, please expect a delay in receiving your order. Rest assured, we will send these out as soon as we can. If you have any questions, email Kokoko@nightdepartment.com***

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell

I haven't heard anything as just completely perfectly formed out of the gate--every decision the right one, what to include but more what to exclude--maybe ever. Don't know who Sault is, but they do not sound like they could be anyone who hasn't paid some dues to get this good. Or signed some Satanic contracts. 100% confidence, and it sounds 110% earned.
